“Lagrangian numerical tracking of oceanic plastics”
Training school, Plouzané May 2023Within the context of the International Research Network PASSPORT-2C, and with the support of IRD and the UBO foundation, a formation on numerical tracking of ocean plastics with a Lagrangian approach took place at IUEM in Plouzané (Brittany region) during the period 2-5 May, 2023. Globally, PASSPORT-2C addresses key methodological issues to promote interdisciplinary approaches and exchanges and facilitate their transfer and further comparisons between worksites. Its focus will be primarily on the transfer of plastics (micro and macro) from the Land to the Ocean, with special attention to the City to Coast component in intertropical zones.
Participants from five countries including Indonesia, Mauritius Islands, Djibouti, Thailand and Viet Nam, presented their projects and research activities on the topic and learn the theoretical bases and practical skills of the software ARIANE, developed at LOPS and dedicated to the Lagrangian computations in the ocean water masses. Training sessions on computers were completed by several conferences in order to present different faces of the complex problem of the marine dispersion and pollution dynamics. A visit to the site and facilities of CEDRE, the French National leader of macro-litter and microplastics monitoring network for litter on the shoreline and inputs from drainage basins since 2012, were also planned. Despite the high level of complexity in marine pollution problem, basic knowledge and highly applied Lagrangian technics were assimilated by the participants.
